Did you know God wrote a book about statistics? It’s called Numbers! (Because my favorite subject to teach is Statistics, I think that's brilliant.)
Actually, many of the records in the Hebrew scripture (Old Testament) are data about real people who mattered in the history of God’s Kingdom. One day I happened to be listening to a music CD while reading the Bible. Almost simultaneously, as I began reading a list of names in Nehemiah 3, the singer began singing what sounded like a lament: “If the Lord be for us, who can be against us.” For the first time, I began to see the Israelites laboring to rebuild the wall. That list of unpronounceable names became a record of the pathos of real people with real struggles in very difficult circumstances.
If God wrote something like that today, it would have all the names of the people you labor alongside of. If who built which section of the physical wall mattered that much to God that he had Nehemiah record it, how do you think he feels about those who are rebuilding the walls of the spiritual city and spiritual temple? Where is your name on the Wall?
